Malaysia Has at Least Six Months of Food Supply, No Emergency Stockpiling Needed, Says Deputy PM
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Malaysia has sufficient food supply capacity to meet national needs for at least six months, with no immediate requirement for emergency stockpiling measures, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said.
Speaking to reporters on Monday (Nov 2) after a Malaysia–China meeting on investment, trade and economic cooperation in Kuala Lumpur, Ahmad Zahid said the government remained confident in the country's existing food security arrangements.
He stressed that adequate supplies of essential goods remained available for Malaysians and other residents.
Government continues to monitor essential supplies
According to Ahmad Zahid, Malaysia's current food security capacity is sufficient to cover at least the next six months.
The government therefore sees no need to introduce extraordinary emergency measures or advise the public to stockpile essential items.
Monitoring of food availability and basic necessities will continue to help maintain adequate supplies.
Global preparedness concerns
His remarks followed international reports that at least 33 countries had issued preparedness guidance encouraging households to keep emergency supplies.
These recommendations were linked to potential disruptions caused by armed conflicts, extreme weather, electricity outages and cyberattacks.
France and the United Kingdom were among the countries reported to have encouraged households to prepare at least 72 hours' worth of food, drinking water and other essentials.
Malaysia not in an emergency situation
Ahmad Zahid emphasised that Malaysia was not facing an emergency requiring households to undertake urgent food stockpiling.
However, a six-month national food security capacity should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every individual food item has six months of physical inventory or that retail prices will remain unchanged.
Consumers can continue making purchases according to their household needs while referring to official information about food supply conditions.
