Malaysia Announces 50% Toll Discount for Deepavali on November 6 and 7
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — The Malaysian government has announced a nationwide 50 per cent toll discount for eligible highway users ahead of Deepavali, which falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that the discount will be available for two days, beginning at 12am on Friday, November 6, and ending at 11.59pm on Saturday, November 7.
The initiative aims to reduce travel expenses for Malaysians returning to their hometowns or visiting family members during the festive period.
Which vehicles qualify?
The discount applies to Class 1 private vehicles at toll plazas nationwide.
Class 2 vehicles using the Penang Bridge are also included in the scheme.
However, the government has excluded two toll plazas located at Malaysia's southern international border.
These are the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) toll plaza on the North–South Expressway and the Tanjung Kupang (TTK) toll plaza on the Malaysia–Singapore Second Link.
Motorists passing through these two locations will continue paying the normal toll rates.
Government to cover RM20.11 million in costs
According to the Works Ministry, the initiative is expected to cost approximately RM20.11 million in compensation to participating highway concessionaires.
The final amount will depend on verified traffic data.
The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) will work with highway operators to coordinate the implementation of the discount.
Supporting festive travel
The initiative is intended to make travel more affordable during the Deepavali celebration, particularly for Hindu families making journeys to reunite with relatives.
However, the discount is not restricted by religion and is available to all road users whose vehicles meet the stated eligibility requirements.
The government said the measure is also intended to support family connections and social harmony during the festive season.
Motorists urged to plan ahead
The Works Ministry has reminded motorists to check their travel routes before departure and monitor current highway conditions.
Drivers should also ensure their Touch 'n Go cards or eWallets have sufficient balance, since the initiative offers a discount rather than free passage.
Motorists are advised to follow speed limits, maintain safe distances and take regular breaks during long journeys.
The announced discount period ends on November 7, meaning the Deepavali public holiday on November 8 is not covered by this particular offer.
