Manchester United Stage Remarkable 3-2 Comeback Against Roma as Cunha Scores Twice Before Red Card

MANCHESTER, Nov 4 — Manchester United ended a nine-match winless run with a dramatic 3-2 victory over AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League, recovering from a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford.

Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha scored twice in the closing stages to complete the comeback, but was subsequently sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

The result delivered a much-needed victory for manager Michael Carrick following a difficult period for the club.

Roma take early control

The visitors made an impressive start when Matías Soulé opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

Donyell Malen extended Roma's lead just six minutes later, leaving United trailing 2-0 after only 17 minutes.

Despite attempts to respond, the home side failed to score before half-time.

United entered the interval facing the prospect of another disappointing result, with Roma holding a significant advantage.

Fernandes sparks second-half recovery

United improved after the break and were awarded a penalty when Cunha was brought down inside the area.

Captain Bruno Fernandes initially saw his effort saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez.

However, the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken after a Roma player entered the penalty area too early.

Fernandes converted the second attempt in the 58th minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

The goal gave United renewed momentum as they increased the pressure on the visitors.

Cunha delivers decisive double

With seven minutes of normal time remaining, Cunha capitalised on a defensive mistake following a Fernandes cross to score the equaliser.

Three minutes later, substitute Shea Lacey provided the decisive pass that allowed Cunha to break into the penalty area and score again.

His second goal, in the 86th minute, completed an extraordinary turnaround and gave Manchester United a 3-2 lead.

The late comeback sparked celebrations around Old Trafford as supporters witnessed their team recover from a seemingly difficult position.

Celebrations end with dismissal

Cunha's night took an unexpected turn shortly after his winning goal.

The forward received a yellow card for removing his shirt and celebrating among supporters.

He later committed a foul on Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi during stoppage time, earning a second booking and a red card.

Despite finishing the match with 10 players, United held on to secure all three points.

United look to build on victory

The win ended a nine-match stretch without victory and provided relief for Carrick and his players.

However, the defensive problems that allowed Roma to take an early two-goal lead remain an important concern.

United's next Premier League match is scheduled against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

The upcoming fixture will offer another opportunity for the team to demonstrate whether the Champions League comeback can translate into improved domestic form.
